Brazil beat Switzerland 1-0 to reach round 16 of FIFA World 2022

Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli saw their nation reach the last-16 of the World Cup after beating Switzerland 1-0, although Granit Xhaka's side remain well-placed to also advance.

Casemiro's excellent first-time strike on 83 minutes proved to be the difference at Stadium 974, which saw the Selecao secure successive wins and ensure a spot in the top two of Group G, three points ahead of the Swiss in second.

Jesus was introduced to the field on 73 minutes following a frustrating start for his side, who thought they had taken the lead when Vinicius Junior's well-taken goal was chalked off for offside in the build-up.

However, the Manchester United midfielder's excellent goal finally ended the Swiss resistance, and ensure Granit tasted defeat for the first time in Qatar, who skippered his side for the entirety of the contest.

He has the chance to guarantee a place in the knockout rounds on Friday, December 2 when they take on Serbia in their final game, knowing a win will guarantee progress.

Meanwhile Jesus and Martinelli - who was an unused substitute - can secure top spot when they face Cameroon at the same time.
