Process of obtaining Certificate of Occupancy in Kano State

The process of obtaining Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) from the Kano State Bureau for Land Management is according to the Land Use Decree of 1978, which states that all lands in the state are vested in the Governor who shall hold it in trust and administer it for the benefit of all.

The procedure is as follows:

1. Filling the application form and the payment of the relevant fees,
2. Attaching the relevance document which include
a. Site/Survey Plan
b. Prove of Ownership
c. Means of Identification

3. Then the processing starting by verification/clearance from the following MDAs depend on the application:
a. Kano Urban Planning and Development Authority
b. Department of Petroleum Resources
c.  Fire Service
d. Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Cooperatives, and Tourism
e. Local Government
f. Nigeria Police

How much does it cost to get C of O in Nigeria? Obtaining a C of O form will cost between ₦5,000 to ₦10,000.

A Certificate of Occupancy (C of O0 is a legal document issued by the government that proves that a person owns land in Nigeria. The Government reserves the right to seize any plot of land or property without a C of O at any time without any compensation paid.

The purpose of obtaining a certificate of occupancy is to establish that the house or building is in a livable condition according to the law. Such a certificate is usually required to occupy the facility on a daily basis, to sign a contract to sell it and to close a mortgage on the property.
